Right about now, you're probably getting your credit card bills from your Christmas shopping. Also, you may be shocked to see that your credit card minimum payments have doubled.

For months now, I've been writing about how things are going to get much harder for the American consumer now that harsh bankruptcy laws are taking effect. However, just because it's harder to get a fresh start does not mean there is no more relief for those who need it most.

So most people would still be able to file under the new law.

More requirements

There are additional hurdles to get the bankruptcy relief and debt help that you want and need. Now, there is the requirement that you undergo a credit counseling session that teaches you how to budget your money and beware of the evils of credit and debt. You also need to demonstrate how your case is not a bankruptcy abuse. There are new forms and new headaches for someone navigating the process.
